Have a Heart! - Support homeless young people at YMCA Crouch End

WAFFLE FUNDRAISER TO REDUCE HOMELESSNESS

There's a charitable event selling Norwegian waffles today in HPJ cafe to raise money for work with vulnerable young homeless people.

The waffle fundraiser this Wednesday (27th April) is led by Crouch End resident, 8-year-old Elliot Wibye, who is running in the Crouch End Fun Run on Sunday 15th May, an event organised by YMCA North London.

Elliot said:
“I am lucky to have a happy, safe family life. So I want to raise money for others at the YMCA hostel who aren’t so lucky. I am running in the YMCA Fun Run, and instead of getting sponsored, I thought it would be more fun to hold an event and send the money to the YMCA. My Mum is Norwegian, so we’re going to sell Norwegian waffles, cut into the shape of blankets! Great carbo-loading to prepare for the Fun Run!”

Elliot and his Mum Ellen will be selling Norwegian waffles at Hot Pepper Jelly CafĂ© between 3.30-5.30pm on Wednesday 27th of April.

All proceeds will go towards the YMCA North London’s work with young vulnerable homeless people.

Shanice and North London YMCA

Many young people arrive at the YMCA hostel with nothing, fleeing abuse. The hostel provides 157 young people with a safe place to sleep at night. A specialist support team assist to reduce the risk of them becoming homeless in the future, by helping them to find college courses, employment, and move-on accommodation.

Living at home became impossible and unsafe for Shanice when domestic violence between her family members, including an attack on her by her father and brother, triggered depression and anxiety. At risk of homelessness, Shanice moved into the YMCA hostel last year, providing her with a safe place to live. Later in the year, hostel staff supported Shanice to find longer-term move-on accommodation.
